Lights Out Will Keep The Lights On This Season

This just in off the high-speed sports wire…Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune reports that Shawne Merriman will play this season, injured knee and all.  In what has been the most anticipated and now surprising announcement of the preseason, Merriman decided to ignore the recommendations of multiple doctors and will attempt to start the regular season with the team.  I say attempt because at this point, Merriman’s knee could give him problems early and often once the season begins. 

No news about the reaction from the coaching staff or front office.  The team recently announced a contract extension for Merriman’s back-up, Jyles Tucker, leading most people to believe that Merriman’s season was done.  Could Merriman’s announcement simply be a ploy to force the Chargers front office to make the decision to sit him due to the injured knee?  I have a feeling this story is far from over.
