Chargers: The Final Roster
August 31, 2008(Carlos Polk -left- blowing up a blocker in training camp)
Yesterday was roster cut day across the NFL, and that always means we’re in store for a surprise or two. I’m not going to pretend that any of the cuts made by the Chargers were overly significant, but one did come as a bit of a surprise. Carlos Polk, the eight year veteran of the Chargers, loved by teammates and fans alike, was cut to make room for rookies DeJuan Tribble and Corey Clark. The injury prone Polk was known mostly for his special teams work on the field, but off the field he was a motivational leader for the team. With the injuries suffered by Shawne Merriman, this move surprised me. AJ Smith typically likes veteran depth behind his star players. Apparently the front office feels comfortable with the younger tandem of Jyles Tucker, Tim Dobbins, and Marques Harris backing up our outside LB’s.
The most significant move of the day was the activation of C Nick Hardwick from the PUP list. His stay on the PUP list would have required him to sit out the first six games of the season, and probably more. By pulling him off the list before the start of the season the Chargers are telling us that they believe Nick will be ready sooner than that. In fact, he started taking his first reps at center before Friday’s exhibition game against the 49ers.
In other news, backup TE Scott Chandler was put on IR due to an injured foot sustained Friday night. No TE was brought in to replace him, which means that Legedu Naanee could see more playing time at the TE position to spell Antonio Gates when needed. Along with Brandon Manumaleuna, I think we’ll be alright at tight-end.
