Preview: San Diego Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
November 7, 2008Just about two weeks ago we watched the Chargers lose a very winnable game on another continent in front of fans who didn’t care. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, they made the move that should have been made 12 months ago and fired Defensive Coordinator Ted Cottrell. Almost immediately you could sense the relief from Chargers defenders who struggled to grow into the complexity of Ted’s defensive schemes and grew tired of being poorly utilized.
To rob from Yogi Berra, like baseball, football is 90% mental, and the other half is physical. The previous
lack of aggressiveness from the Chargers defense was a mentality instilled by Cottrell, that was then acted out on the field by his players. It’s not rocket surgery- if you call a passive play, the players are likely to play passively. With Ron Rivera (right) now calling the defensive shots, the Chargers immediately saw a change in their aggressiveness and discipline on the practice field. That’s like music to my ears!
Chargers on offense: The Chiefs have the last-ranked run defense, and their pass defense isn’t exactly something to proud of. They are full of young players who could become difference makers someday. Right now they are just playing out the season. LT should have a HUGE day, but don’t bet against Rivers getting his 300-yards and 3-TD’s. If the defense keeps it together, don’t be surprised to see Hester and Volek filling in by the 4th quarter.
Chargers on defense: Besides a better attitude and a more disciplined approach, I’m really not sure what to expect. Will Rivera let Shaun Phillips and Jyles Tucker lose on whomever is the Chiefs QB this week (I know it’s Tyler Thigpen, but I still don’t know who he is)? Will a simplified defense allow Antonio Cromartie to get his head screwed back on straight? I don’t see how the Chargers wouldn’t be able to get some problems fixed this Sunday as long as they don’t take anything for granted.
Prediction: Chargers score early and often, and coast in the 2nd half because they can. Chargers 33, Chiefs 12
